Thousands of Orange County residents could have medical debts erased
“It means fewer people will get their debt cleared,” said Tara Felten, an organizer with Central Florida Jobs With Justice, which led the effort to persuade the board to help with debt relief. “My hope and plan is we can continue to talk.”
Central Florida Jobs With Justice estimated the county could wipe out medical debts of 300,000 residents totaling $827 million if it would invest $8.7 million in ARPA funds, figures with which Lempert agreed. Lempert said he wasn’t certain what the lesser pledge would buy.
